Spherre News A place where we tell you what we're up to…

Three Exciting Announcements, All in One Tidy Post.

By Marcie Barnes

As promised in the last post, we've got quite a bit of good news to share today.

First of all, we are very pleased to announce the addition of Porter Gale, author of Your Network Is Your Net Worth and former VP of MPorter Galearketing for Virgin America, to our advisory board. I met Porter nearly two years ago at a conference and eventually came to the realization that she would be a valuable person to have a conversation with regarding the vision for spherre, especially after reading her wonderful book. It was actually during that conversation that I made the decision to change the tagline and general feel of spherre, mostly in order to concentrate more on the human connections that could be possible within the unique spherre experience. Of course - we will continue to give back to your favorite charity as part of our business model as well - because that's the way it should be.

shhhhh top secret...Speaking of the unique spherre experience, I would like to be transparent and admit that there has been a long delay in creating a prototype for spherre. This is because we have been through a very long line of programmers from all over the world who have either told me what we were trying to do could not be done, or otherwise tried and failed to complete the task. Therefore, I am super excited to announce that we now have a working prototype that demonstrates the unique nature of the spherre experience. Please feel free to contact me directly if you would like to see a demonstration, and I will be happy to tell you more.

And finally, big kudos to Smashing Boxes in Durham, NC for finally solving the prototype problem we were having. I am thrilled that they have agreed to be a strategic partner with spherre - and most certainly will be a huge asset for us as we move forward towards launching our first beta site. We look very forward to working with you into the future!

We’re Going to Be Part of the Crowdbackers Launch!

By Marcie Barnes

We are pleased to announce that on February 8, 2012 Spherre will be one of the pilot startups raising funds on a new crowdsourcing platform called www.crowdbackers.com. The mission of crowdbackers is "to build a community that inspires, creates and funds the best new technology and entrepreneurial ideas" - and we are very excited to be part of their launch.

Much like www.kickstarter.com we will be offering incentives at each donation level, so depending on how much you decide to pledge (and once we reach our fundraising goal), you'll get cool stuff that in all cases have a retail value equal to or greater than your donation (with the exception of autographed books, it's a little hard to place a proper value on those).

Everyone who donates will be invited to the private beta of Spherre when it is ready, and other cool things like organic Spherre t-shirts and tote bags will be on the list. In addition, we'll be offering some other cool eco-friendly products such as:

Also, some of the exciting incentives we've got lined up so far for the upper-level donations include:

Please do check out our fundraiser on February 8. Mark your calendars, and of course, we'll be reminding you, too.

Introducing Our Sister Site…Greenetarians.com

By Marcie Barnes

We are very pleased to announce that we are creating a sister site for spherre that will be a high-quality news/education site called www.greenetarians.com. The theme of this site will be "Green Lifestyle Design" -- a concept designed to attract people from all over the world who are interested in becoming greenetarians.

We plan to have topics on the site that will correspond with (and educate people on) their typical modern lifestyle and how they can be "greener". For example, the best kinds of foods to buy that are not only better for your health but also for the health of the planet; the best modes of transportation that (again) are best for your health and the health of the planet; the best kinds of cleaning products to buy that (once again) are best for your health and the health of the planet, and so on and so on.

We also will be featuring some of the best grassroots non-profits from around the world that are doing the most important work keeping our planet and its inhabitants clean, happy and healthy. Of course, these will be the non-profits that we hope you will support by joining www.spherre.com when it's ready.

As with spherre, the content will be free, and the only advertising will only be highly relevant products and services that go along with the topics at hand. We will also have a membership package available if you want to join the official community and get some cool gear along with it.

Now, can you help us out and tell us which of these two logos is your favorite?
(Click to see the full version, will open in a new tab. And feel free to add comments at the bottom of this post.)

Final vote: which is your favorite?

  • 2 (83%, 5 Votes)
  • 1 (17%, 1 Votes)

Total Voters: 6

We Have a New Look!

By Marcie Barnes

Big thanks to the fine folks at This is Beautiful for creating our new logo! We are excited to move forward with a more polished and futuristic look that represents all of the connections we possess with each other and our planet. Since the spherre will also be connecting people together, we think it's pretty cool.

Why the change? I created the original logo myself when I was first mapping out the concept and wanted something more sophisticated and "web 3.0". In addition, this gives us a solid, unique look that will also be the foundation for the iconography and general look and feel of the site as we develop it. Plus, I figured it would be best to get this out of the way before launch :-).

Please feel free to leave feedback in the comments and let us know what you think.

What the Heck is Spherre?

By Marcie Barnes

Welcome to news.spherre.com where we'll be posting about, you know, what we're up to. So, I thought I'd start off with a little introduction/background about myself and how Spherre was born.

My name is Marcie Barnes, and I am the Founder of Spherre, Inc. When I was taking grad classes at UNC-Chapel Hill's Journalism School I came up with a new architecture for a social network - with the goal of connecting people in the dictionary sense of the word networking (meeting new people) - and also for a purpose. I then was accepted into a program called Launching the Venture at  UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School. There, I started to build a team, a validated idea, and a clear vision what I wanted to do with this new architecture I had conceived.

Fast forward to today. The team has evolved a bit but I still have great people in place to include my COO & CFO, Ron Rackowski and a fantastic group of advisors that have helped guide me on this road to where we are today. Big thanks to Jake Finklestein and Tim Ferriss for their inspiration and guidance along the way, as well as the "junior advisors" from Kenan-Flagler who've helped tremendously (and continue to help) with business planning.

More news is in the pipeline but for now I hear you asking:

What the heck is Spherre, and why should I care?

So the (super top secret) architecture I designed could be used for practically anything - but we're planning to do something big, green, and global. In a nutshell:

  • It will be a place where you will be able to spend time networking (in the traditional sense of the word, outside of your friends/family/coworkers) and we'll send money to your favorite charity  just because you spend time there.
  • It will be free to use.
  • Your experience, including your privacy settings will be highly customizable.
  • You'll be able to create your own Spherres according to demographic information in order to find and chat with like-minded people.
  • You'll be able to expand your presence on the spherre in order to market yourself, your business, or your charity - which is, in essence, an entirely new  online advertising infrastructure that places emphasis on relevance.

Our goal is to change the economy of how global charities are funded online as well as how people, businesses, and charities interact with each other - for the purpose of making this world a better place.

We're working on putting this new architecture together, and we plan to start rolling out a beta site in the near future. If you would like to to be notified when this happens and/or help with beta testing, simply send an email to: join (at) spherre dot com or fill out the simple form at http://spherre.com.

For even more information about spherre, you might want to check out (and like) www.facebook.com/spherre or www.twitter.com/spherre - or we're happy to have you contact us directly at: info (at) spherre dot com.

Thanks & let us know what you think!

Our First Crowdfunding Project (Ya There Will Be More)

By Marcie Barnes

We've started a project at the most awesome www.crowdrise.com - where people can post projects or events to benefit charity. And they have a really important tagline: "if you don't give back no one will like you".

Since Spherre, Inc. is technically a for-profit company, you can't give money directly to us, but that's fine because we've designated one of our most favorite charities, Panzou Project, to get the funds. And we're OK with that, since the fantastic ex-gang members at Panzou make us beautiful t-shirts. And if I may, the beautiful Founder of Panzou, Laura, could really use the work for her team. This is a charity that should never, ever, go down in flames.

The crowdfunding page is here: http://www.crowdrise.com/spherre. Please consider skipping a latte, a new pair of shoes, or the new Mercedes in order to help us help Panzou who helps us in return. A win-win all around.

For more information about spherre, you might want to check out www.facebook.com/spherre or www.twitter.com/spherre - or we're happy to have you contact us directly at info (at) spherre dot com.

The Panzou Project website is at www.panzouproject.org and they are also on those oh-so-popular sites: www.facebook.com/PanZOuProject and twitter.com/panzouproject

Thanks for your consideration in making the world a better place!
